We moved to San Francisco in the fall of 2007, leaving behind our loud but beloved apartment on Sixth Avenue and 12th Street in New York. And so began our west coast adventure. Here, we’re learning all kinds of things about nature, exercise and work-life balance while raising our son, and enjoying a commodity we had very little of in New York: time.
Now, in many ways, our frequent return trips to New York resemble catching up with an old friend– the basics stay the same, but you need some QT to catch up on the story. There is a line on exile in The Divine Comedy– “you will leave everything you love most”. And so we have in some ways. Now we live in a city that is not a character itself– we are the characters.
Our jury’s still out on how long we’re here and when we’ll be back, but until then we are…New Yorkers in Exile.
